On May 25, 1963, leaders of thirty-two independent African States met to form the Organization of African Unity (OAU). Led by Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia, this organization laid the foundation for liberation movements throughout the African continent and the Diaspora. In commemoration of this monumental achievement, May 25th has been celebrated as African Liberation Day in every corner of the world since.
